A delight to revisit these Edward Gorey book jackets. Malaise and ennui. Aah.
I came to know his work late in the game, through his own books, like Amphigorey, Gashlycrumb Tinies, and The Curious Sofa. In high school, I felt the jolt of recognition while browsing used book stores. I hadn’t known that Gorey worked in publishing and had done so many book covers. His work is so distinctive and, if you like it, you tend to really like it.
I was tickled to learn 1) that the Library of Congress archives almost every book jacket ever printed (p.6), and 2) that EG also found reading Henry James painful (p.14).
